06/05/2009 - Tips ban for Minimum wage
Using Tips to make up staff pay to the National Minimum Wage levels will be outlawed from October 2009. This was announced by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform on the 6th May 2009.
This follows a consultation on the use of tips and cover charges on the relation to the National Minimum Wage. The practice of using Tronc Schemes in which the tips are pooled, to pay staff’s basic wages was highlighted as unfair by unions and industry groups.
The government will also be working towards great transparency and clarity for consumers through a new industry code of best practice.
Further details will follow.
